In a bid to lower the number of accidents and crackdown unlicensed motorbikes in Sharjah, more than 3,500 bicycles and motorbikes have been impounded by the authorities in the emirate.
A total of 1,041 motorbikes and 2,572 bicycles were reported impounded mainly for not obeying road rules or observing safety procedures.
Maj Marzouq Al Naqbi, Director of the Vehicle Impound Division at Sharjah Police, was quoted to have said by the National that the campaign targeted unlicensed motorbikes and those found disturbing the peace.
He urged residents who use bicycles to wear helmets and fluorescent jackets to enable motorists to spot them on the roads.
“The intensity of the crackdown will continue until all the negative behaviour from motorists is stopped,” said Maj Al Naqbi.
