Forget about boy-meets-girl and try this on for size: hearing- and speech-impaired boy meets girl, falls for girl, girl marries someone else, then realises she still loves boy, but by then boy has fallen for second girl – who happens to be autistic. Not your regular love triangle, is it? Barfi, Anurag Basu’s latest directorial venture, stars Ranbir Kapoor as a happy-go-lucky petty thief, Murphy, and Priyanka Chopra as his childishly endearing paramour, Jhilmil. Both were in Dubai yesterday to promote the film a week ahead of its release, along with the producer Siddharth Roy Kapur of Disney UTV Studios. This is Kapoor and Chopra’s second film together (after 2010’s Anjaana Anjaani) and at the press conference, both of them seemed equally excited about the project. “This is an out-and-out feel-good film,” said Kapoor. “You will walk out of the theatre with a big smile on your face,” Chopra said. This is UTV’s third film with Kapoor and its fifth with Chopra. Deftly dodging questions about the film’s box office stakes, Kapur urged audiences to “look beyond the numbers” and instead at the soul of the film.
